Budapest as a Network

Author: Milán Janosov & Balázs Szima-Mármarosi

Cities are complex urban systems that consist of a wide variety of interwoven networks. Probably the most trivial of them all is the road network, which outlines the physical characteristics and geographics in a given city. This visualization shows that network in the case of Budapest, containing 84,299 intersections as network nodes and 146,245 street segments as network links. The street segments' typical length is about 64m, which summing over the entire city makes up to roughly 9,375,200m or about 222.2 marathons. At world-record speed, which is around 20km/h, this would take almost 19 days of continuous running.
