Ballet Creations have a Persistent Gender Gap

Author: Yessica Herrera-Guzman

The ballet industry has reportedly a gender gap in original ballet creations. In this visualization, we explore the historical data of The Royal Ballet, one of the greatest ballet companies of the world. Data were web scrapped from the company’s online collection using a Robotic Process Automation (RPA). The data contain 449 ballets and 847 artists within a time period from 1931 to 2012. Our analysis reveals a persistent gender gap that disfavors females not only in their representation, but also in the type of connections that artists have access to in their collaboration network.
